The boys soccer A team defeated Oakwood 5-3 in a tense, hard fought championship match to complete an undefeated 9-0 season, and secure the Delphic league title. Initially trailing, Lorenzo Giovane ’30 put the team on the scoreboard early, tying the game at 1-1. Emeka Emenike ’30, and Brooks Resnikoff ’30 each then added two goals to lead the Wolverines to victory.
After falling short in last season’s final, the team entered the championship with added motivation. For many players, this final game was the result of months of group effort. Players emphasized that the success didn’t come from individual performances, but combined diligence throughout the season.
“It took a lot of hard work, teamwork, stuff like that,” Brooks Resnikoff ’30 said.
Defender Parker Moon ’31, who joined the team this year, said the environment and team culture helped play a crucial role in the championship run.
“It means a lot,” Moon said. “It’s my first year here, and the atmosphere here is great. My teammates are even better.”
Theo Mulkerin ’30 pointed to the group’s ability to overcome challenges, despite roster changes from the previous season.
“We faced a lot of adversity, with new seventh graders coming in and people from the eighth grade who weren’t here last year,” Mulkerin said. “It’s been really good to get to know all of them, and it just means the world.”
Head Coach, Ronaldo Lomeli said the group’s unity was a defining factor in the team’s success.
“We lost last year, so we had that chip on our shoulder,” Coach Ronaldo said. “It feels good to achieve something together as a collective unit.”
Coach Lomeli added that the season was a strong foundation for the players moving forward.
“I’m excited to see what they do in high school next,” Lomeli said.
