The annual grandparents/special friends’ day at the middle school campus on May 1st was a positive bonding experience. Students bring their grandparents or special friends to accompany them during the first three periods of the day. The school provided visitors with a complementary meal for lunch at the end of the day.
“I really appreciate their school and I’m so impressed by their academics they’re experiencing.” Mai Anh Leung, the aunt of Olivia Leung ’29 said, “The teachers are so nice and I’m so surprised how well they are doing in school and how talented they are at their performing arts,” “I think being a student here is such a great blessing, and I’m so grateful that they can experience a quality education and I’m impressed by their classmates, surrounded with excellence.”
Minka Mendoza ’29 brought her Aunt to spend class together and so did many other students during this special day. Classrooms were filled with visitors as they watched and engaged in each subject the student was attending.
“I think it’s important because it serves as a way to maintain the connection between a kid and their grandparents/special friends.” Minka Mendoza ’29 said, “Getting to see their grandchildren or special friend learn is something beautiful.”
“I really enjoyed seeing my grandma experience the classes I took,” Wesley Winnick ’29 said, “She seemed so interested in the classes I participated in, and I loved sharing that time with her, especially when we ate lunch together and talked about my English class.”
“I think it’s just another extension of our community just like we bring parents for back-to-school day or parents for meetings with the deans,” Head of Middle School Jon Wimbish said, “I hear a lot about creative things that teachers do in their classes to involve the grandparents,” Wimbish said, “I know it’s not our job to engage in the relationships building between grandparents and their grandkids, or special friends and their kids but that is part of what that day does and I think it’s a beautiful thing.”
