Elle Hong ’29 joins Varsity Swimming and Diving in her first year at Harvard-Westlake. This is an impressive feat considering Varsity teams are mostly students of older grades. There are around four to eight freshmen on the Varsity each year, and this year there were six.
Hong reflects on her experience as a freshman on the Varsity team
“I like being on a team where most of my teammates are older because I have people who I can learn from to help become a better swimmer.” Hong said.
Varsity Swimming and Diving Coach Jason Schwarz discusses Hong’s performance on the team.
“Elle has brought great experience,” Schwarz said. “She came to us with a lot of club experience, and she was very versatile in our line ups. We could use Elle for so many events. At our mission league finals she scored major points in the 100 breast and 500 free!”
Hong is proud of her hard work on the team where she gets to be with people who work just as hard as her. She shares her goals for the following years on varsity.
“My goals for my next years on Varsity are to make it to CIF and become the best swimmer I can be.” Hong said.
CIF swim is the high school swimming and diving season governed by the California Interscholastic Federation. It comprises regional section championships and a state championship, typically running from mid-February through early May.
Although this season is over, Hong plans to continue her strong performance in the seasons to come.
