The Harvard-Westlake Dodgeball Tournament continued its annual run of 22 years as the Wimballers faced off against Hit or Miss on Thursday, April 16. With a mix of faculty and student athletes competing, the game reflected ongoing participation from across the community.
Hailey Vang ’29, a player for the Wimballers, described how the match between the two teams unfolded in rapid sequences.
“Everything happened quickly,” Vang said. “I felt really energized but was also nervous throughout the game since I was the last person standing in both rounds.”
Despite the pressure, both teams adapted quickly. Players were constantly moving, dodging, and attempting to strategize mid-round.
History teacher and faculty player for Hit or Miss James O’Leary described the unique demands of participating in the tournament.
“A lot is happening during the game, and you need to move, strategize, and look out for throws all at the same time,” O’Leary said. “Also, entertain the crowd!”
When asked about preparation, O’Leary emphasized that he primarily relied on general physical activity and experience in the lead-up to the tournament.
“There is no dodgeball preparation before playing, but I stretch before the game,” O’Leary said. “I’ve played in about 10 tournaments as a teacher at HW, so that’s an advantage.”
From the Wimballers’ perspective, the absence of a key player affected their performance in the match.
“We were missing one of our strongest players, which I think affected the overall flow of the game,” Vang said. “I’m proud of our team and especially the fact that we played together for the past three years in every dodgeball tournament. That’s why it’s one of my favorite things about HW and the community.”
Even after the match concluded, Brady George ’29 demonstrated a forward-looking mindset as the tournament progresses toward its final rounds.
“We are looking forward to and getting ready for the semifinals, and claiming victory in the tournament,” George added.
Hit or Miss claimed its victory in the semifinals and went on to win the championship 2-0 on May 7, securing the title.
