Amelia Choi ’29 has quickly become a standout member of the Varsity Girls Golf Team. Choi first picked up a golf club when she was 10, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She has trained consistently ever since, taking private lessons as well as practicing on her own.
Choi reflected on her biggest challenge. “I would definitely say my own mental,” Choi said. “My dad always tells me that golf is a game against yourself. Although you are competing against other people, ultimately, it comes down to whether or not you are in the right mental state to play well. I’ve always struggled with keeping a positive mindset, and that has affected many of my games.”
Choi describes her golf journey as one filled with many ups and downs. By staying patient and committed, she has learned to learn from difficult moments. Choi uses those moments to strengthen both her game and her mindset.
Choi’s passion for golf is reinforced every time she plays.
“I really enjoy playing golf because it’s fun,” Choi said. “That’s such a generic answer, but I think that it really sums up everything I get to experience through it. I get to make new friends who share my interests, I get to travel the country for tournaments, I get to be outside, and I get to feel the satisfaction of my efforts paying off.”
Varsity Girls Golf Coach Brandon Augustus reflected on Choi’s performance.
“Despite being new to the school, [Choi] integrated seamlessly with her teammates, quickly becoming a leader on the course,” Augustus said. “From summer practices through the competitive season, she brought consistency, positive energy, and exceptional play to the team.”
Augustus looks ahead to what Choi will bring to the team in the following years.“We look forward to her continuing to be a huge part of the team’s success both on and off the course in the upcoming years,” Augustus said. “As her game continues to reach new heights individually, we can’t wait to celebrate a lot of victories.”
