The Wolverines showed effort on both ends of the court, with Marcel Shepard ’29 leading the defense with multiple steals and blocks while Nico Velamoor ’29 was making tight passes and layups. Turnovers ultimately lost them the game as most of Loyola’s points came from fast breaks.
“We need to bring energy to this game,” Coach Thomas McBride said.
In the huddle before the game, the coach repeatedly told the team they needed to bring next level intensity and energy going in. The energy of the Wolverines ended up being the reason they were always in the game, no matter the score.
“We have to be able to get each other involved,” Nico Velamoor ’29 said.
Velamoor displayed excellent passes and drives to the paint, leading his teammates to score the ball more and be confident in shooting their shots.
“We have to have more pride when we lose the ball.” McBride said. “A lot of us lose the ball then hang our heads, try to go get the ball back.”
During the 3rd quarter, McBride highlighted how the team needed to be quicker to bounce back after failure or mistakes. After this, the players were a lot more aggressive and played with more heart.
The next freshman basketball game will be on January 21 against Sierra Canyon.
