For most 9th graders, the question of life after Harvard-Westlake feels distant, but according to Director of HW Works Kwaisi France, that’s the exact point of starting early.
HW Works, France said, is “a structured system that takes students from
exploring careers in 9th grade to building on that experience in high school allowing you to leverage the Harvard-Westlake network into college and jobs. Designed to build skills, experience, and connections over time.”
For 9th graders walking into France’s office for the first time, the process is simple. “The first meeting with a 9th grader involves an intake where I get your name, interests, and hopes and aspirations for the upcoming summer short-term, then life generally long-term,” France said.
France also mentions the sign up process for the HW Works platform and building what he calls a “professional” profile. This includes LinkedIn page, an introductory email template to reach out to professional contacts, a cover letter, and a resume.
He also an emphasized on how the barrier to entry is low. “Students need not to come in with anything other than the desire to see what’s out there in the world for them at their age.”
What sets HW Works apart from traditional school career office is the extent of access. Students get access to France’s cell phone number, with his only ask being that they identify themselves before texting. France also serves as a sophomore advisor and as a faculty advisor to a lengthy list of clubs. These clubs include HW INC, Venture Club, Global Affairs Club, Women in Business, and Global Leadership on Business and Entrepreneurship.
The reach of HW works extends well past the the campus. HW Works host annual events in San Francisco, Chicago, Austin, Houston, Dallas, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, D.C., Atlanta, Nashville, Miami, and Raleigh-Durham. A huge effort to connect current students with alumni in each city.
“We truly are HW4Life,” France said.
For 9th graders still deciding whether to reach out, France has a simple message: the door is always open, and building your future starts now.
