Boys Varsity Water Polo powered past Westlake High School 17–11 making a huge comeback from the nerve-wracking, tied first quarter, on Thursday Nov 6.
Those nerves came to an end in the second quarter, with back to back rockets into the cage by HW, putting them in the lead. By fourth quarter HW had taken control of the match with the score 16-11.
Finally, as both bleachers roared and 15 seconds left in the game, the ball accelerated towards the cage, blocked by the post and was rebounded back into the cage for the goal by Will Gorshe ’29.
#5 Harrison Bowman ’26 led the team with 5 goals, while goalie #1 Nathan You ‘26 made several key saves to hold off Westlake’s offense. Will Gorshe ’29 contributed during the 3rd and 4th quarter, with multiple assists.
“Being on varsity is hard because you always feel like you have something to prove to the coach and players, tiny mistakes are magnified, its an achievement but it adds to the mental stress of doing the sport. People question if I deserve to be on varsity and that’s also pretty hard, ” Gorshe said.
The game ended under the sunset and HW took the win, though Westlake put up a good fight.
“The biggest theme of this season is composed intensity,” Gorsche said. “Last season we had no composer, this season we have much more and beat weltlake by 5 more points than last year. It’s important to be composed during the hard moments.”
Gorsche said the team’s biggest focus this season has been “composed intensity,” noting that their improved composure has translated directly into better results, including a bigger win over Westlake than last year. He added that staying calm and focused during difficult moments has been a major key to the team’s success.
