It was a cold afternoon and the JV soccer was ready to start off their season. The JV soccer team faced off against Birmingham on November 19 in a defensive battle that ended 1-0 Birmingham.
The game started off slow, both teams trying to hold possession. The HW defense of Charlie Sherwood ’29, Owen Kim ’29, and Gabriel Dewitt ’29 held it down, getting multiple stops and clearing the ball.
“Our defense was solid, but the ball kept on coming back to us every five seconds causing us to work overly hard,” Kim said.
The game felt like it could tip one way at any moment with Theo Graines ’29 and Sam Azarbal ’29 commanding the midfield, generating the little bit of spark that HW needed the whole game.
“It was hard to get the ball into Birmingham’s side of the field the whole game.” Azarbal said. “We got some passing going late in the first half but it wasn’t enough to break through their defense.”
In the second half HW started off getting good passes and good through balls into the opposing defense. Graines and Azarbal both had their own free kick, and Graines almost scored but the goalkeeper saved it at the last second. All of a sudden, in the late second half Birmingham broke through the HW defense. The Birmingham midfielder got a 1 on 1 shot against the goalie and barely snuck it through, 1-0 Birmingham. HW was now in full panic mode and made a ton of last second passes, but none of it was enough, end of game, 1-0 Birmingham wins.
