Hands in Action, a new club this school year, was created by three ambitious students planning to impact their community outside and inside of school. This club containing around 25 members is advised my teacher, Sr. Jurado, and admissions director, Ms. Zapata. They meet every Day 6 during Community Time in Wang 331.
“One of the main inspirations in making this club for me was the necessity for a student-led place that created service opportunities, but is also fun and enjoyable to do with friends,” Co-leader Chinua Ulmer ’29 said.
Co-leader Jack Hong ’29, has had several memorable experiences with the club.
“Something that was really memorable about the club was the recent trip to the Belmont Senior Living Village,” Hong said. “I was able to get to know the club members better and it was really fun being able to partake in a community service opportunity with students who wanted to serve the same cause as me.”
Ulmer speaks about the importance of community service towards students.
“I think that community service is important to Harvard-Westlake students,” Ulmer said. “It is one of the most direct ways to address Harvard-Westlake’s value, purpose beyond ourselves. Although Hands in Action is one way for students to meet their service requirements, the club is also an opportunity to bond with the community around you, something I believe to be of value on its own.”
Hong has helped organize an upcoming fundraiser for the club’s service projects.
“We are expecting to host a boba fundraiser in order to raise money for the CAMFED (Campaigne for Female Education) project as well as to be able to allocate funding for our current service project,” Hong said. “Members are currently working on STEM and activity kits, which we will be sending to primary schools across Los Angeles.”
