The Middle School Track and Field team participated in the Cluster #3 track and field meet that took place on the Upper School Campus on April 8. The meet had athletes from Harvard-Westlake, Sierra Canyon School, Chaminade College Preparatory, Brentwood School, and Oaks Christian School. The Middle School team put up a good fight in all of the events, taking home a notable amount of wins.
After months of training, the work of the girls 400 meter by 4 relay team paid off in a last minute overtake by Anya Wu ’31 where she brought home the victory after barely passing the person in front of her by an inch, securing the win for her and her team.
“It went pretty well,”Benji Greenwald ’30 said. “I didn’t do quite as well in the 800 meter as I would have hoped, but I really dug deep for the 4 by 4.”
The track meet consisted of events including the high jump, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, and 400 meter by 4 relay.
“Practices leading up to the meet have been going pretty well,” Calder Lee ’30 said.”We had practice over spring break here too, so I felt confident about the meet and that we were all doing pretty well in terms of our conditioning.”
Greenwald reflected on the balance between having fun and winning. “I believe that it’s a little bit of both,” Greenwald said. “Obviously, I would love to win, but I genuinely enjoy this.”
Head of Track and Field Jonah Koolsbergen ’83 also attended the meet and coached the athletes as well as organizing the event. “We’re doing extremely well, but we know there is a long way to go, and we want to keep evolving,” Koolsbergen said. “We want to keep improving… and when the whole league is assembled, the competition… will be stiff and we want to be right in the center of that aim and up and coming.”
