The JV track and field teams had a huge day at the Senior Day Invitational on April 21, with both the boys and girls teams winning big in one of their best meets of the season.
Senior Day is one of the team’s most special meets of the season, giving the team the chance to compete while also celebrating and honoring the seniors for their dedication to the program before they graduate. Even though seniors were being honored, freshman athletes came in strong.
According to Head Coach Jonas Koolsbergen, the meet was an important step as the team keeps building toward League Week.
“It was a strong performance by the team,” Koolsbergen said. “Both JV teams won the meet convincingly and really continued our journey through the season toward our League Week.”
Many athletes stood out with strong performances across the meet.
On the girls side, Roxi Azarbal ’29 kept up her strong season by winning the 1600, while Violet Martin ’29 took first in the 3200.
In the field events, Naomi Rush ’29 had one of the biggest performances of the day, winning both the long jump and triple jump.
Overall, the team may have even done better than expected.
“We did very well,” Koolsbergen said. “I expected us to do well and we may have even outstripped what I was hoping for.”
Even with all the success, the team is still focused on getting better.
“We are always looking to evolve more, achieve more PRs and improve as a team,” Koolsbergen said. “That never stops. It is what we do.”
With big wins, strong individual performances, and continued improvement, Harvard-Westlake’s JV teams showed they have real momentum as they head toward the biggest part of their season.
