On May 19, during an all-school assembly, two ninth graders were awarded the Tamkin Award “for their commitment throughout their Middle School years to actively and voluntarily participate in the affairs of the community beyond the School, and who, in doing so, have been instrumental in encouraging others to become similarly involved”.
Head of Middle School Jon Wimbish announced Claire Lee ‘28 and Hannah Bayat ‘28 as the recipients of this year’s Tamkin Award, based on their extensive community service contributions and original essays.
As the Middle School Symphony’s Concertmaster and the leader of Cadence For a Cause, a community service orchestra, Lee has done a lot of community service through violin. Lee has played at places like the Ronald McDonald House, where families stay while their children are in the hospital long-term, and Inclusion Matters, a playground designed for kids of all abilities.
“I had no idea that I was going to receive the award,” Lee said. “My heart started racing like crazy when Mr. Wimbish called my name!”
Lee reflected on the impact of her performances, noting how meaningful it is to bring joy to others through music.
“It’s really meaningful to see how just a few hours of practicing violin can brighten someone’s day,” Lee explained. “Watching a kid smile or seeing a senior relax and feel at ease in a care home makes it all feel so worth it.”
Bayat has contributed more than 220 hours of service, doing work such as tutoring kids through Learn to Be and becoming a Teen Line listener.
Bayat said that she was definitely surprised when Wimbish announced her name as she rose up from her seat to accept the award, listening to Wimbish read her application essay aloud.
“What makes me passionate about the work I do is that a lot of it’s really personal to me, and also I think I’m just really lucky to get to do it,” said Bayat. “It’s a privilege to be a part of these programs, and I’ll always be grateful for them.”
Both students offered advice to peers interested in getting involved.
“There are so many different ways to do community service work,” said Bayat, “And you can always find something that you’re passionate about.”
Lee added that even small actions can make a significant difference.
“I hope more people discover how meaningful it is to give back to their communities,” said Lee. “Sometimes, just showing up and sharing a part of yourself is enough to brighten someone’s day.”
