The annual dodgeball tournament tipped off last Wednesday with instant energy, as Shaka Select defeated Team Parker, two games to one in a challenging opening-round. This game set the tone for what could be a highly competitive bracket.
The intensity carried into the second game of the day, as Glorytellers faced The Ballerz, adding to a bracket already filled with “a lot of experienced and confident teams,” said Da Ballers co-captain, Leilani Patterson ’29. Glorytellers were able to take the win and advance to the next round.
Andrew Strang ’29, captain of The No-Throw Nightmares, said his team of baseball players are embracing the pressure while preparing for their next opponent after earning a first-round bye.
“I’m feeling very nervous. Up until this year, baseball players haven’t been allowed to play at all.” Strang said. “The one thing that we have to do that’s unique is we all throw with our left hand to save our right arms from injury.”
Water polo player William Gorsche ’29, captain of Team Enchanted, said his team is entering the tournament with confidence and unfinished business after falling short last year.
“In my opinion, we’ve got some of the most athletic kids in the grade,” Gorsche said. “We didn’t win last year, so we’ve got that chip on our shoulder. We’re going to go out with a lot of fire and go get the win.”

Basketball player Lucia Khamenia ’29, captain of the Wimballers, said her team is also motivated after previous seasons. Their team includes Head of Middle School, Jon Wimbish.
“We definitely want revenge this year,” Khamenia said. “With Mr. Wimbish joining our team, I think we have a large chance to win. We’re ready.”
Da Ballers are entering with similar confidence. Team captain Mily Passeri ’29 described the team as talented.
“We’ve got strong captains who keep everyone focused,” Passeri said.
Math Teacher Cole Hoffman is operating the tournament, organizing the bracket and overseeing match play. With multiple teams already making early statements, the path to the championship plaque remains out in the open.
