It is a common misconception that there is one large-scale tournament that takes place in March: March Madness, the college basketball contest. In fact, there are two. In addition to March Madness, there is the Manie Musicale, which is a tournament that showcases French music and music artists from France and other francophones.
Manie Musicale was started when two French teachers from Maine thought it would be a cool way to spread enthusiasm about French culture. At Harvard-Westlake, similar to March Madness, students fill out brackets for the competition to predict the winner.
“I’ve been keeping up with the tournament every year since 2017 by making a bracket and picking a winner’, French Teacher Madame Geisler said. “When I came to Harvard-Westlake, I thought it would be a great idea to tell the students about the tournament to get them involved in it too.”
This March, students picked Dr. Yaro, a rising French artist, as the winner. In the final round of the tournament, Dr. Yaro got more votes than French star Gims, and his song, Minimum ca, won.
