Borquez speaks about video game industry, virtual reality technology

Anthony Borquez P ’19 spoke to 16 students on Jan. 30 during break about game-making and the videogame industry. Borquez is the founder and CEO of Grab Games, a company which specializes in virtual reality and augmented reality entertainment. Borquez also started the USC game design program in 2002.
Borquez demonstrated his company’s virtual and augmented reality technologies. He emphasized the transformative impact that their technology could have on education and entertainment, ranging from virtual exhibits in museums to augmented reality videogames. Students said they learned a lot about emerging technologies.
“The presentation was very cool. People don’t tend to realize how amazing VR and AR technology is. It’s a different side of the future that we’re not looking at. Learning about new tech was very informative and interesting,” Ben Weinberg ’21 said.
Borquez also offered advice to students aspiring to work in the videogame industry. He described the experience of working in the industry and emphasized the value of the students’ studies at school.
“He said that math is very important for getting into a company. The first task game companies set when hiring you is they make you take a math test. Writing and history are all very important too. Basically there’s so much you learn at school that will help you succeed,” Middle School Programming teacher Jessica Kaufman, who organized the talk, said.
