As part of AAPI Heritage Month celebrations, students participated in a special Cultural Roadshow event presented by TeachAAPI on Thursday, May 14. The event featured a K-pop dance workshop held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Burrows Dance Studio.
The workshop was led by dancers from Jam Republic, who are currently touring schools across Los Angeles through the Cultural Roadshow program. TeachAAPI, a nonprofit organization, focuses on bringing Asian American and Pacific Islander history, culture, and stories into schools and educational spaces.
During the session, students learned choreography while also gaining insight into the artistic intentions and techniques behind the movements. The workshop emphasized both performance and cultural appreciation through dance.
“It was an interesting experience. Learning choreo online is so different from an immersive experience with choreography,” said Juha Kim ’29 and Chinua Ulmer ’29 in a joint statement. “You can learn the intentions behind movement, it has more soul, the textures of the movements.”
The event was one of several activities recognizing AAPI Heritage Month and provided students with an opportunity to engage directly with performers and contemporary aspects of Korean pop culture.
