Students Pack Meals to Support Local Homeless Community Students came together to help address food insecurity by preparing meals for those in need, with all meals being delivered to the North Hollywood Home Alliance, a local homeless center serving the community. The Youth Ending Hunger association focused on assembling ready-to-eat meal kits that could be quickly distributed. “These bags will be delivered to them to be distributed out to the community tomorrow,” Eleanor Levy ’30 said, referring to the North Hollywood Home Alliance. Each event produces a consistent number of meals, allowing volunteers to make a measurable impact in a short amount of time. Elise Church ’30 explained that around 90 meals are typically packed during one session. The quick turnaround time ensures that the food remains fresh and reaches people efficiently. “It only takes, like, one day, one night,” Church said. “We get them on Tuesdays, and then we deliver them on Wednesdays, so within 24 hours, they actually go to the people in need.” Each meal kit is designed to provide a balanced and convenient option for those receiving it. According to Nipa Boonyamas, who works in the school cafeteria, the bags include a variety of simple but nutritious items, including A turkey sandwich, hard-boiled egg, whole fruit, bottled water, and a bag of chips The meals primarily benefit individuals experiencing homelessness, but they also support others in the community facing food insecurity. By providing 90 meals in a single event, students and volunteers are able to offer immediate assistance while also raising awareness about an ongoing issue. Events like this highlight how small, organized efforts can make a meaningful difference. In addition to helping those in need, the experience encourages students to stay involved in service opportunities and continue supporting their community beyond the classroom.
