Happy Ice brought sweets and charity to the middle school during Black History Month on Friday, February 20th. The shaved ice company sold treats to the community to benefit the organization SÜPRMARKT.
“Black Leadership Awareness and Culture Club (BLACC) is dedicated to creating a welcoming environment for all and a place where we can celebrate Black culture,” MS BLACC co-leader, Jennifer Gabrail said.
This year, the club supported local initiatives by partnering with SÜPRMARKT and Happy Ice. By promoting and selling these tasty treats, BLACC is raising funds to support SÜPRMARKT’S cause, showing how the Harvard-Westlake community can make a positive impact in our wider community.
In 2016 SÜPRMARKT was founded by Olympia Auset and Lonnie Wade. Olympia had to make a tiresome commute in order to buy organic food. Auset and Wade decided to put an end to this food desert in their community. SÜPRMARKT was born. The organization provides fresh food to their South Central Los Angeles community.

The event was a hit, drawing students, faculty, staff and the community eager to support this cause. Lines for Happy Ice filled Horn Commons, and everyone seemed excited to get their hands on this tasty treat.
“The event is going well and a lot of people love the shaved ice,” Whitney Foroughi ’31 said.
Laughter filled the air, there were smiles on everyone’s face and all around it was such a fun environment.
“While people are very enthusiastic about the shaved ice it is important to “highlight the deeper importance of this event” Naomi Rush ’29 said.
“We brought a black owned business to support our school and to show the importance of community,” MS BLACC club leader Sydney Hardnett ’29 said.
BLACC made this event so much more than just about shaved ice. While a delicious treat, this event brought the community together, with the whole middle school coming to support it.
