Bright lights, ABBA songs and cheering students filled the Saperstein theater on November 14th as performers took the stage for the school’s production of Mamma Mia!. The cast of 28 students led the performing arts program’s first musical since last year’s production of The Addams Family. Known for its iconic pop soundtrack and high-energy choreography, the show gave performers and audience members a familiar, feel-good experience.
In the weeks leading up to the show, the cast balanced after-school rehearsals, weekend run-throughs and hours of choreography review. Director of the Middle School Musical and Play Fredreka Irvine said each stage of the process brought the group closer together and helped performers grow into their roles.
“I think what I love the most is when I see a 7th grader become friends with a 9th grader. You know, it’s like what connected them was the musical. That to me is amazing because it’s such an event we become like family,” Ms. Irvine said.
For many performers, stepping onto the stage was a mix of nerves and excitement. Ensemble member Owen Askew ‘29 said the feeling of performing live is difficult to describe. “It feels exciting,” Askew said.“I don’t know how to describe it.”
Lead actor Luke Reck ‘29, who played Sam, said the production represented a personal milestone after months of rehearsals. “I am ready — this is my moment, and I am going to make this moment incredible,” Reck said.
Irvine said moments like these are the reason she continues directing student theater. ”Seeing students grow through performance is one of the most rewarding parts of the entire process.”
