Boy’s frosh basketball season comes to a close

The Harvard-Westlake (HW) boys freshman basketball team started off their season strong with an overall record of 12-5 and a league record of 4-0. The boy’s team didn’t start off very strong this year, as they opened up the season with a record of 4-4 in the beginning. Their season quickly turned around halfway through; having won eight out of their last nine games played they have put themselves on good pace for the rest of the season.

The boys’ key to success this season has been their game plan of keeping up a fast pace as well as controlling the paint by passing to Derek Schneider ‘22, the team’s 6-foot-3 leading scorer this season.

“I really like how we push the pace in games, especially when our opponents are already down in tough game situations,” Schneider said in an interview. “We continue to push ourselves and our conditioning during practice really helps in the endgame.”

Nine of the games so far this season have come down to the wire and ended in a difference of less than ten points. The team’s endurance and stamina have helped them gain that final edge over all of their opponents in games that come down to the final minute. A perfect example of this was their game against Crespi where the Wolverines closed out the game by a difference of only two points in the final seconds. This game became a crucial win in the Wolverine’s change from a losing streak to a winning streak.

The boys team continued to add to their winning streak this past weekend with a game on Friday, Jan. 4 against Notre Dame. They kept the game at a manageable margin and chose to strike their opponent in the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, they outscored Notre Dame 23-15 in order to secure a victory in an important league game and improve their overall record to 12-5 on the season.

“I love the way that we always play in sync together. We always go into each game trying to play at our best and that really allows me to enjoy myself on the court with my teammates.” Mikey Schwartz ‘22 said in another interview.

This attitude is clearly displayed on the court in the Wolverine’s quick turn of events this season.
