Alex Cora: Robbed of Coach of the Year

Alex Cora, manger of the 2018 World Series winning Red Sox who won a franchise record 108 games, was robbed of the 2018 Coach of the Year. The winner of the award was the manger of the Oakland A’s, Bob Melvin. This is a very poor decision by the voters and I believe that Alex Cora was by far the most deserving coach for the award this year.

Cora led the Red Sox to their third World Series in the past 11 years in just his first year of coaching. He came into the season with a team ready to win but it was only under his leadership and strategy that the Red Sox were able to have the great season they did.

Cora is a former Major League Baseball player so he was able to give helpful instruction to his players. This instruction clearly paid off as the Red Sox were without a doubt the best team in the league.

Cora was robbed of his award because he lost to Bob Melvin, a manger that lost to the Yankees who Cora then beat later on in October. Since Cora was able to beat a team that Melvin couldn’t, I believe that that shows a level of coaching skill.

Furthermore, Cora made better trades this year than Melvin and these trades were a big help in getting the Red Sox to the World Series. An example of one of these trades is getting Nathan Eovaldi from the Tampa Bay Rays for Jalen Beeks. Eovaldi pitched amazing in the postseason, showing the significance of Cora’s moves.

Finally, Cora made the better in game decisions than Melvin which is the biggest reason why Cora should’ve been named the better coach than Melvin. Cora made the right calls the whole regular season but Melvin made just as many good moves.

However, when it came down to the postseason Cora made all the right moves like choosing Eduardo Nunez to pinch hit and he hit a home run whereas Melvin didn’t step up to the challenge. Due to their in game decisions, Melvin lost in the first round of the playoffs and Cora went on to win the World Series, showing why Cora should’ve won the Coach of the Year.
