Politician and attorney Bakari Sellers spoke via Skype to the Middle School Black Leadership Awareness and Culture Club on Nov 2.
Sellers told students about his experience helping President Obama in his 2008 campaign and stories about people he knows who were part of the Civil Rights Movement. He also spoke about where he stood in the 2016 election and his experience running for State Legislature.
“It was pretty enlightening and eye-opening. He told us a lot of interesting stuff that was going on and shared his experience as a CNN commentator,” attendee Spencer Flippen ‘21 said.
Sellers graduated from Morehouse College at age 20. From there he became the youngest African-American state lawmaker in the United States. Sellers recalled meeting resistance when he told his parents that he wanted to work in government as well as when others found out about what he wanted to do.
“There were people who weren’t my teachers or my parents who did not think that I was going to make it,” Sellers said during the Skype call.
Attendees said that Sellers’ talk influenced them to think about the issues in our society.
“A lot of the problems in society that are brought up by this election act as polar opposites, are things that current young people are going to need to work and try to fix. You know, like Mr. Wimbish said, you can choose how you want to participate in the process so to have someone who is knowledgeable and is a model of getting involved in the process early, come speak was a benefit and a blessing and a privilege,” seventh grade dean and co-leader of BLACC Jon Carroll said.
