Kent Denver journalism teachers visit HW Media

School journalism advisers from Kent Denver School in Denver, Colorado, visited middle school journalism program on Thursday, Sept. 21.

Kent Denver School is split into an upper school and middle school, grades 6 through 8 at their middle school and grades 9 through 12 at their upper school.

According to Niche’s 2023 School Ranking, KD is ranked the number one private high school in Colorado and ranked 134th best private high school in the nation.

History teacher Sam Gubitz and English teacher Sydney Lang visited HW Media at both the middle school and the upper school.

They came to learn from its journalism program and apply what they learned to their school’s journalism program. Even though the two schools are similar, KD and HW schools differ from each other. KD’s media classes do not have a space dedicated space. Gubitz and Lang said they envision making their school’s publications program similar, noting that they liked the structure and layout of The Spectrum.

Another difference is the KD Sun Devil Advocate’s focuas.

“They [the Kent Denver reporters] do a lot of national news stories on major issues,” Gubitz said.

During the interview, Gubitz and Lang both said how they were learning about journalism along with their students and connecting their past knowledge in their academic fields to high school journalism.

“It’s good to see a middle school program that’s much more organized than ours,” Lang said. “We’ve just started this year. So we’re here to learn.”
