In their final game of the season on January 27th, the boys Red Team dominated Oakwood with an 8–0 shutout at home, marking their first win. The Red Team finished the season with a record of 1–1–3. While the team did not advance to the playoffs, the players showed growth over the course of the season, earning several close ties and remaining competitive throughout the year.
“I think we all worked hard during the season, and we didn’t have the best start,” Lucas Lee ’30 said. “We had a few losses, but my team definitely worked hard throughout the season to prepare for this.”
Luke McCarthy, head coach of the team, thought that the team’s win was due to their strong start.
“Starting with the right mindset and intensity, and getting goals early in the game, definitely helped us win,” said Coach Luke McCarthy, coach of the Red Team.
With the Red Team controlling possession for most of the match, Oakwood struggled to generate offense and rarely tested the Red Team’s defense. As a result, the Wolverine’s goalkeeper saw limited action throughout the game.
“I didn’t have to play a big part in the game, but it was kind of fun,” the Red Team’s goalkeeper Benji Greenwald ’30, said. “I’m just happy I didn’t let in any goals by accident, and I didn’t have to touch the ball that much.”
Although midfielder Anderson Wang ’30 scored multiple goals in the game, during the third quarter he received a yellow card, an in-game disciplinary sanction, for disputing a goal with the referee. The disagreement stemmed from whether the ball had fully crossed the goal line to count as a goal.
“We had to get Anderson off the field after he had some words with the referee, and after that, he didn’t return to the game,” McCarthy said.
Despite the mid-game drama, the Red team still persevered, and the dominant shutout against Oakwood allowed the team to close the season on a positive note.
