The Harvard-Westlake boys red middle school soccer team earned a 1–1 draw against Chaminade after a late tie goal saved the match on Tuesday.
Chaminade opened the scoring just three minutes into the first 20-minute quarter, capitalizing early to take a 1–0 lead. The remainder of the game was largely uneventful, with both teams struggling to create consistent scoring opportunities. Harvard-Westlake maintained possession for stretches but was unable to break through as the clock continued to run.
In the final minutes, however, Anderson Wang ’30 delivered the decisive moment. Breaking down the right side on a fast break, Wang fired a shot from outside the box that found the back of the net, tying the score late.
“I knew I was the best player on the field in that moment, so I took responsibility and decided the game,” Wang said. “Those moments are made for me.”
Head coach Luke praised his team’s resilience following the early setback. “I’m most proud of the players for not giving up and persevering at the end of the game, even with things not going their way,” he said.
Luke emphasized that the comeback was a collective effort. “A lot of players stepped up. I can’t name one, as the second half required a group effort,” he said.
Defensively, Harvard-Westlake settled in after conceding early, with goalkeeper Ben Silver ’31 helping hold Chaminade scoreless the rest of the way. “A clean sheet,” Silver said when asked about his performance.
Substitute Lincoln McCannel ’31 said complacency was a factor in the slow start. “We underestimated our opponents, but in the end we fought back,” he said.
The tie highlighted Harvard-Westlake’s persistence and late-game composure.
