The freshman boys basketball team went 2-1 over the week at Bishop Alemany, claiming 3rd place in the tournament, which brought their overall record to 4-3.
The Wolverines claimed wins against Campbell Hall and Maranatha, winning 59-50 and 54-39 respectively. They dropped the semifinal game to Calabasas, losing 51-39.
In their loss to Calabasas, their second half defense proved to be their Achilles heel, as they held a four point halftime lead before allowing a few easy layups, which Calabasas took advantage of. Even in their wins, they held double-digit first half leads before letting their opponents in the game – in both wins, they were able to close it out, however. Most shocking of all, they held a 30-3 lead against Maranatha before they were able to storm back to cut the lead to three in the fourth quarter.
Their lack of second half defense has coincided with a prolific first half offense, with Marcel Shepard ’29 and Nico Velamoor ’29 being the orchestrators behind the scoring. However, the team’s shot has fallen cold in the second half, with second-half quarters in all three games in which they scored in the single digits.
The freshmen will look to win a couple more tournaments at Calabasas before the end of the calendar year, before starting league play, which starts on December 7th at Chaminade.
