Wolverine girls’ varsity epée fencing team goes against Chaminade as part of the Homecoming lineup. Led by head fencing coach Erika Velarde these sword wielding wolverines scored another victory for HW with a final score of seven to three.

“The results were fantastic, we were very fortunate to compete with Chaminade Women’s Épée. We have a very successful Épée team and the support from the community was very nice,” Velarde said.

Velarde started coaching the fencing team in 2008. Since then she has witnessed the fencing program grow and rise to compete in national tournaments.

“I have been doing fencing all of my life, and I think it is something that is powerful,” Velarde said.

The varsity team celebrates their victory, reflecting on their dedication and love for the sport.

“I like the kids here and, you know, it’s fun to hit people with a sword,” epée fencing team member Sophia Schaffer ’25 said.
