2019 Met Gala brings back old phrase “Camp”

Fashion’s biggest night out, also known as the Met Gala, is a night that celebrates the opening of a new fashion exhibit each year, took place with this year’s theme of “Camp.” Camp has been recently defined by celebrity attendees as being extremely extravagant and avant-garde, and the attendees were willing to do whatever it took to stand out. In a recent article in the New York Times, the true background of camp was unveiled; it was not always as mainstream as it is.

“The word has been recorded since the very beginning of the 20th century, and the concept has likely been with us much longer, but [Susan Sontag, author of “Notes on Camp] brought what had been an esoteric, private code, used largely by and among gay men, into the open air,” Matthew Schneier, author of article ‘It’s Unnatural? Absolutely,’ said.

Camp was once used in drag culture but has been reclaimed by the modern fashion industry. However the background of “Camp” was not being focused on at the time of the event, people have been reading up on its history since hearing about it again.

From light shows inside of ball gowns to precise replicas of celebrity heads, the event was far from boring. For example, Lady Gaga, one of the co-hosts, did not hold back on their outfits. With four outfit changes and red carpet walks, people on the internet were not left unsatisfied. Even the best outfits there were ones not favored as much as they would have otherwise been.

Not every attendee of the Gala’s outfit was as well received as those of Gaga. Though Jared Leto’s shocking outfit that consisting of a Gucci replica of his head could be considered strange or a flop, much of the world was left merely astonished. Twitter user @sydney_wray, for instance, said, “Jared Leto’s head was the best part of the #MetGala.” Gaga was also not the only one who changed her outfits. Katy Perry came dressed in an illuminating outfit, surrounded by candles, creating a chandelier. This look was slightly controversial and received mixed reviews, but her after-party look left everyone shocked. Perry changed into an outfit that surrounded her in a hamburger. Though it was an interesting choice to change into, the internet seems to be getting a big laugh out of it.

There were also many jaw-dropping moments of fashion at this year’s Met Gala. For example, the newlywed couple Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas attended the gala in coordinating Louis Vuitton outfits by Nicolas Ghesquière.

Another favorite of the night was the outfit put together by Kacey Musgraves modeled after a Moschino Barbie and designed specifically for this year’s theme. This was an all pink patent leather dress, complete with a hairdryer purse and a voluminous blonde wig to match the doll. Her outfit was beyond well-received, as it followed the theme perfectly; she was dressed as a Barbie, and the Barbie was created just for the event that took place.

Finally, Zendaya’s outfit continued the fairytale trend when she arrived in a full, classic Cinderella outfit complete with a fairy-Godmother. Her dress was lit up with blue lights when the wand of her fairy godmother wove, and the press was overwhelmed by the outfit’s beauty and creativity.

YouTuber James Charles attended this year’s Met Gala, and various comments were made about his appearance at the event. Charles has voiced the struggles of his gender and identity on his YouTube channel, making him vulnerable on a public platform. Many believed that he didn’t deserve to be there; they even brought up comments he made about another celebrity’s outfit and compared their outfits. Though he received quite a few hateful comments for appearing at the Gala, his supporters on his main platform, YouTube, seemed to be supportive and happy for him.

The Met Gala looks did not disappoint this year, and the theme brought out many impressive yet shocking ensembles for each celebrity.
