Mental health resources

In a big community like Harvard-Westlake (HW), students often struggle with mental health issues but don’t discuss them because of the stigma around mental health. In light of May being Mental Health Awareness Month, this article aims to provide resources to anyone who is dealing with mental health issues or is simply stressed or wanting to talk.

Among these is Teen Line, an international suicide prevention hotline where teens can talk to someone their own age. As a volunteer for this hotline, I’ve learned that the most helpful thing to do for someone struggling with mental health issues is to be empathetic; however, it can also be really useful to know there are websites or other places to reach out to if you need guidance. The resources below have all been verified by Teen Line, and hopefully will be helpful to you or a friend should you want them.

  1. ReachOut.com: This website has articles about any mental health issues or advice on whatever you’re going through. It also has resources that you can check out if you want to reach out to someone and talk about it.

  2. Dealing with School & Mental Health Playlist: This video by Kati Morton discusses managing mental health while dealing with school, talking to teachers, test anxiety and more.

  3. Calm.com: This is a website and app that has guided meditations and other features that can help if you’re feeling anxious, stressed or just want to feel calm.

  4. Call Teen Line at (310) 855 4673 or text “TEEN” to 839863: If you are struggling and want to talk or text Teen Line, it is a great place to talk to another teenager who understands what you are going through and will be there to help.
