“Shazam” presents an electrifying superhero story

“Shazam!” is a superhero origin movie filled with energy and humor. The action flows seamlessly together, and the interesting cast of characters makes every minute of screen time enjoyable.

“Shazam!” is the seventh movie in the DC Comics Extended Universe franchise, succeeding previous titles such as “Wonder Woman” and “Justice League.” It follows the story of Billy Batson, a teenage boy with a troubled past who has recently moved into a new foster home. One day, he encounters a wizard, who gives Billy the ability to turn into Shazam, an adult superhero version of himself. Billy navigates the threats of high-school, responsibility and a menacing villain while learning what it means to be a part of his new family.

The plot of the movie is action-packed and attention-grabbing from the start. The introduction does an excellent job of setting up suspense and character relationships that will become crucial parts of the story. The careful planning behind the movie’s scenes was one of its strongest aspects. At the end of the movie, all the parts of Billy’s story that previously seemed unrelated work together to create a triumphant and rewarding conclusion with exhilarating action.

“Shazam!” successfully focuses on creating a fun viewing experience. Most superhero films highlight the heavy responsibility that heroes carry by portraying them with the fate of the world or even the universe resting on their shoulders. “Shazam!” doesn’t put the same burden on its main character, providing an exciting alternative to the norm. An adolescent sense of humor that isn’t impeded by larger concerns fills every single scene like when Billy’s foster-sibling considers naming Billy’s alter-ego “Mr. Sparkle-Fingers.” The young cast does a great job with the intricacies of each character, and they bring new energy and personality that middle-aged superheroes can’t match. The youth of the actors doesn’t detract from the movie, either. Each of the members expertly crafts their characters in a mature and believable style.

The visual effects also contribute to the lively mood of the movie. All the costumes are vibrant in color and stand out on the screen. Shazam’s superhero suit is a dazzling crimson red with a shining gold emblem and belt. The special effects are pretty standard for a superhero movie: Shazam can shoot lightning out of his hands. However, those effects are incorporated into clever movements that utilizes them to develop the optimistic tone.

“Shazam!” contains meaningful messages hidden inside of its bright packaging. The movie succeeds at addressing challenges like belonging and identity. At first, Billy struggles to accept his new caretakers and siblings, refusing to call them family. As a superhero, he continues to doubt his abilities and wonders what his responsibilities are. These personal issues are artfully incorporated into the lighter mood, which makes the movie meaningful even with its large focus on humor.

“Shazam!” is a great movie to watch for viewers who want an exciting alternative to the grimness of other superhero movies.
