Volume 31

Creed II blends old and new

“Creed II” centers around reigning heavyweight boxer Adonis Creed, played by Michael B. Jordan. Having recently won his first championship in the previous movie, Creed starts to gain respect around the world. Eventually he receives a challenge from Viktor Drago, played by Florian Munteanu. Viktor is the son of former soviet boxer Ivan Drago, who, 30 years prior to the events of “Creed II,” killed Apollo Creed, father of Creed. With the need to avenge his father’s death, Creed accepts the challenge and decides to meet Viktor in the ring. The movie tells a story of redemption, family and learning to always pick yourself back up.

While being a solid movie, “Creed II” suffers from being too predictable. In the end of the movie, Creed wins, which is an obvious resolution for anyone who has ever seen any of the original Rocky movies. “Creed II” has the same beat and rhythm as all the previous movies, which makes the way the movie plays out too expected.

Even though the movie is at times predictable, it has many positives that make it a great film. The fight scenes are well choreographed and show the excitement as well as the brutality of the sport of boxing, making it a good action movie. But one of the finest parts of the movie is the training montage, which shows Creed go through unconventional training methods to become the best, a homage to the previous Rocky films.

“Creed II” carries on the legacy of the Rocky movies and is an overall good sportsaction movie. Though the movie plays out in an expected way, it ends up as one of the better boxing themed movies. All in all, I think “Creed II” is a great movie and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes a good action movie or is just a fan of the Rocky movies in general.
