Inspired by heroic stories of surgeons with differences, “The Good Doctor” is a new hit television series on ABC starring Freddie Highmore (Doctor Sean Murphy) and Antonia Thomas (Doctor Claire Brown).  This show sheds light on how society views people with mental disorders and tells the story of how a doctor with high functioning autism contributes a unique and life-saving perspective of human anatomy.
“The Good Doctor” has moments of joy, comedy, tension and sadness allowing viewers to feel a variety of emotions as they watch.  The show begins with an intense and dramatic scene displaying the bravery and intelligence of Dr. Murphy, while incorporating drama and good character throughout each episode.  “The Good Doctor” references science, math and medicine, which is rare as most shows about doctors are inaccurate about or entirely exclude anatomy.  Therefore, the show succeeds in teaching lessons about both society and science, while including captivating drama and comedy.
In television, people who have mental disorders or physical disabilities are often excluded or marginalized.  It is especially refreshing to see a show dedicated to and centered on exposing the ableism, not only in medicine, but in the entertainment industry as well.  Thus, I would strongly recommend “The Good Doctor” as it is a unique and enjoyable learning experience.
