Scott Phillips was welcomed as a new coach this year on the debate team. His job is to help the students learn and improve their debate skills, as he goes to different tournaments with the students. Phillips previously taught at Meadows School in Las Vegas.
Phillips mostly works with the high schoolers on the team and attends different tournaments with them.
“I like it lot. The school is super supportive of the debate team. It’s a great place to be. [The students are] all really smart, hard-working, and super engaged. I really enjoy working with the kids on the team,” Phillips said.
Phillips will be traveling more with the team than the full-time debate coach last year.
“He’s the first one to have a position like this at our school. His primary job is to be a full-time assistant coach. We’ve never really had that before. The last couple years, the only full-time person we had was more administrative, so I think he brings an expertise of different types of debate,” Mike Bietz, Head Coach & Director of Debate, said.
Phillips joked that his expectation for the debate team this year is global domination, and he said that he is looking forward to working with the “hard-working, smart, and wonderful” debate team.
