The girls’ black soccer team fell to Chaminade College Preparatory 1-0 in their home opener, their first league game, on Dec. 12.
The Wolverines entered the season with high expectations, coming off a 2023-24 Delphic League championship. Last year, the team excelled under coach Nick Hazell, playing a 4-3-3 formation. The Wolverines scored 53 goals in possession-based soccer and went 10-0 overall to win the league title.
During the offseason, most of last year’s players moved on to high school, leaving only a few returners. The program also experienced a coaching change, with Dan Raben stepping in as head coach.
Raben said he was proud of the team’s effort and performance against a strong Chaminade side.
“The main highlight is we worked hard,” Raben said. “There was competitiveness. It was the first game of the year, and the girls performed well. [Chaminade] might have been the best team we’ll play all season long.”
Raben said the newly formed team showed unity and worked well together despite limited preparation.
“We only had a couple of practices under our belt,” Raben said. “We still have several games to play, so it’s not the end of the world if we lose a match.”
The Wolverines will face Paul Revere Middle School on Jan. 10 after the winter break.
