Volume 30

2019 Grammy Awards

This year’s Grammy Awards was an interesting show that featured amazing tribute songs and performances. The first performer was Camila Cabello, who opened by singing her hit song, Havana.” The performance looked like something right out of a musical from the brightly glowing house she started singing in, and all the people in outfits popping with color dancing in the background. Camila’s song also featured famous Latin musicians Ricky Martin and Arturo Sandoval to sing with her for the monumental occasion of her being the first Latina singer who opened the Grammy’s.

Another major part of the show was a tribute to legendary country singer Dolly Parton. Artists who sang with Dolly during this performance included Katy Perry, Kacey Musgraves, the band Little Big Town and Dolly’s goddaughter, singer Miley Cyrus. Critics thought it was strange that Katy Perry was part of this performance, because she has no connection with country music.

In a sparkling jumpsuit, Lady Gaga sang her hit song “Shallow,” from the movie “A Star is Born.” Shallow won two Grammys and a Golden Globe. According to Ava Weinrot ’23, “Lady Gaga’s performance was not great. Her voice was good, but she needed to tone it done a little bit.”

There were many other performers that night including Travis Scott, Cardi B, Little Big Town, Post Malone, Dua Lipa, Dan and Shay and many more. Fifteentime Grammy award winning artist Alicia Keys hosted this years show and played two pianos at the same time for a performance that covered multiple songs.

There were many winners that night, although not all of them big names. Kacey Musgraves won Album of the Year, with “Golden Hour.” Musgraves also won Best Country Song, Best Country Album, and Best Country Solo Performance. I personally did not know who Musgraves before the Grammys, but I heard her sing when she performed, and she seemed very talented.

Childish Gambino, a rapper as well as a talented actor, won album of the year and record of the year for his hit song, This is America.

Cardi B became the first female to win Best Rap Album, with Invasion of Privacy. There was some backlash because of her win, as some fans of Mac Miller were upset that he did not win, and that led her to taking down her Instagram account. She also performed her song “Money.” Her pianist, Chloe Flower, was with her on the stage and she stole the show with her talented piano skills. Cardi is one of the most popular artists right now; and she also performed at last year’s Grammy awards with Bruno Mars.

Dua Lipa performed her song, “One Kiss,” with singer St. Vincent as well as winning the award for Best New Artist. It is also rumored that Dua Lipa will release her new album this year, which would be her second. Ariana Grande was not in attendance, but her album “SweetEner” won Best Pop Vocal Album. Because of the engaging performances to the major awards of the night, the 2019 Grammy Awards is one show to remember.
