Students won gold and silver keys, in addition to honorable mentions, in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
The school’s art department submitted works by around 200 students, 144 of whom won awards.
“I think that visual arts can sometimes feel like it doesn’t culminate in anything visual. It’s nice to have some kind of recognition that kind of increases awareness on how hard the kids are working here,” middle school art teacher Claire Cochran ’06 said.
Cleo Maloney ’21, who received nine awards from the competition, commented on her favorite part of the competition process.
“The most fun part was making the paintings because you have such a connection to them. When they win something, it feels really gratifying,” Maloney said.
Seven middle school students were recipients in the West Writing Region-at-Large category.
Madeleine Boudov ‘21, who won a silver key for one of the two poems that she submitted, expressed her thoughts on the competition.
“It allows people from all different art forms to express themselves and get to win an award or get acknowledgments for the work that they’ve put in… Which doesn’t happen very often for artists,” Boudov said.
