The Wolverine varsity water polo team has started their year off undefeated with a record of 15-0. The team is 1-0 in league games, and has also defeated the 2015 CIF Southern Section champions, Mater Dei, in the finals of the Elite 8 Tournament [9/15-17]. The JV squad has started their season off with a record of 9-4 (1-0 in league).

The varsity team looks good to win another championship this year especially after their recent defeat of Mater Dei.

“I think [the varsity water polo team] is set up to make a really deep run in the CIF playoffs and hopefully bring home a championship this year,” Athletic Director Matt LaCour said.

The varsity team is led by Captain Evan Rosenfeld ‘17, center Felix Brozyna-Vilm ‘17 and attacker Luke Henrikkson ‘17.

“Although some programs would miss the presence of Ben Hallock [’16], this team has enough experience that they’ve got guys like Felix Brozyna-Vilm, Luke Henrikkson and Evan Rosenfeld that can really take over and make the team better by drawing from their own experiences,” LaCour said.

The JV water polo team is led by goalie Nolan Krutonog ‘20, attacker Ethan Shipman ‘20 and center defender Nico Tierney ‘20.

The varsity and JV teams are made up of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. Both teams practice together at the same time under the guidance of head coach Brian Flacks.

“I think the JV and varsity squads practicing together really brings the programs together because we get to spend so much time as one unit while other teams practice separately. It also helps the JV team learn because we get to see the best team play and it really helps you develop as a player.” Attacker Chris Kim ‘20 said.

The varsity and JV squad play Orange Lutheran on Saturday, October 15.
