This year, eighth graders were given the option to go to Catalina Island or Cedar Lake for their retreat. During retreat week, those who chose the trip to Catalina Island’s Emerald Bay experienced outdoor camping, hiking, aquatic activities, and other programs led by Naturalists At Large.
On the Catalina trip, students worked together to earn points for their team and win rewards. They learned how to use snorkeling equipment and about the different species native to the waters of Emerald Bay.
The trip aimed to foster bonding. Students learned to work together on kayaks and shared small canvas tents with two other classmates. Hiking was also an essential part of the trip, with multiple excursions to Inspiration Point. On solo hikes, students took time to reflect on their interests and identities.
8th Grader Lucas Kreymer said he enjoyed the trip, participating in activities, and bonding with friends.
“I really liked night snorkeling and kayaking,” Kreymer said. “I think strengthened my bonds with my friends, and I feel a better connection with the people in my community.”
