Faculty and staff from both campuses, along with students from the Upper School, attended the National Association of Independent School conferences in Anaheim, California, from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2. Teachers and students went to separate conferences. The teachers attended the People of Color Conference (PoCC), and students attended the Student Diversity and Leadership conference (SDLC). PoCC was held to educate attendees about issues of people of color. Teachers discussed issues of equity and inclusion within the community. Thirty two adults and six students from both the upper and middle school campuses took part in the trip.
“I have been going for the past three years. I like talking with other faculty members, and it is nice to learn what other faculty members learned,” history teacher Lauren Nichols said.
Students who attended SDLC learned about diversity issues for race, religion, sexuality and other groups. Attendees learned from teachers and peers in both large groups and smaller, more personal groups. Trip members discussed what they learned in these groups with other students from across the country.
“My favorite part of the trip was either the opening silent stance activity or meeting with my family group each day. The silent stance activity was where all of us gathered in the hall and were told to stand when we identified with a topic that was said,” attendee Noah Aire ’20 said in an email.
