Members of the middle school community celebrated Hanukkah from sundown on Dec. 12 to nightfall on Dec. 20, by lighting the menorah inside Munger Library.
On Dec. 13 and Dec. 14, dreidels were available on the Horns Commons to play with.
“Mostly students seemed to compete with spins, but some kids actually played the gambling game,” Middle School Chaplain Emily Feigenson said.
Lighting the menorah is a new tradition celebrated at the Middle School, and everyone was invited to attend. The celebration welcomed everyone, Jewish and non-Jewish, to acknowledge the holiday in their community rather than just through decorations.
“We also lit the candles and sang songs. It was very simple and lovely…Those who weren’t familiar with the tradition were very respectful and got to learn about it. The kids really liked it and [those who are] Jewish felt acknowledged and those who were not were curious,” Feigenson said.
Faculty said they enjoyed the event as well.
“It was a great opportunity for students and faculty in the library to gather and celebrate,” librarian Loretta Gaffney said.
