The middle school swimming season came to an end on Nov. 4 with first place finishes by the boys and girls teams at the Delphic League Championships. The girls continued their winning streak with a third straight win, while the boys won for the first time since 2014. Coaches Jon Carroll, Sidney Kohls and Alex Martin all celebrated the wins by jumping into the water with the swimmers upon the announcement of the final scores.
Swimmers Andrew Choe ’22 and Ronald Dalmacio ‘22 scored the most points out of the boys, while Therese Enriquez ’22 and Ayva Magna ‘22 led the scores on the girls side, placing first in many of their events. However, both squads depended on more than just first place finishes to carry them to victory.
“When you have superstars, that’s great at the top, but you need to have second and third place [scorers],” Carroll said.
The number of seventh and eighth graders finishing events in first, second or third represented the teams’ depth and power. By locking other schools’ swimmers out of major point-scoring positions, both teams were able to pull ahead quickly and secure wins, with the girls winning by an 18-point margin and the boys by a 23-point margin. Because of the excellent results this season, swimmers and coaches alike are already anticipating next year.
“[I’m looking forward to] being faster and getting more good times,” swimmer Ryan Jeong ’23 said.
Carroll is also excited about next season, but for different reasons.
“[I’m looking forward] to seeing how the excitement of winning both titles carries over into next season,” Carroll said.
