Sophie Brara, ’28 and 19 other vocalists from the middle school’s Madrigals, Vocal Ensemble, and Wolverine Singers, took the stage to perform at the Performing Arts Department’s annual Vocal Solo Show on Friday, Feb. 28.
“My favorite part of the Vocal Solo Show was probably the performance itself,” Brara said. “It was magical on stage; I really felt like someone famous.”
Brara, who has been singing for about four years and previously performed in the solo show, performed a rendition of “You’re Gonna Go Far” as a heartfelt tribute to a friend, similar to her performance last spring where she sang a cover of “Halo” dedicated to her grandmother.
“This year I was more experienced because I knew what was coming, so it was much easier,” Brara said. “Also, there were a lot of people that I knew, so I had friends that I could lean on.” The supportive community of performers was built through many rehearsals and a shared experience in Harvard-Westlake’s advanced choirs.
“My advice would be to never be afraid to perform for people because they all know the courage it takes to get up there,” Brara said. Prior to the performance, she spent about a week finalizing the details through multiple dress rehearsals.
With her meaningful song choices and dedication to her work, Brara plans to continue her path with choir at the upper school level.
