The 2nd Annual Harvard-Westlake Badminton Tournament kicked off on Thursday, Feb. 20th. The first day of the event began as students collectively worked together to set-up the court with the proper nets for their matches. The tournament was hosted and founded by the leaders of the Badminton Club Victoria Wu ‘28 and Lawrence Zhao ‘28, who are also both competing in this year’s event, as well as the faculty advisor, Ms. Gu. The tournament has attracted similar numbers to last year, with fourty-four teams having registered for this year’s badminton tournament compared to fourty-five teams last year. These teams of two will compete in the hopes of taking home the newly created trophy. The first competition day featured a slew of matchups as competitors came out onto the court for the first time in this event.
“It’s really up to the competitors to decide wether it’s more of a fun thing or a competitive thing,”Wu ‘28 said. The tournament has become a way for students to connect and compete with their friends and classmates, while also retaining a competitive environment.
“I had a lot of fun. I do the tournaments for fun,” Katelyn Kim ‘28 said. “I am a pretty competitive person, but at the end of the day it is mostly for fun.” The tournament will continue for the next few weeks, as more teams take the stage in hopes of bringing home the newly created badminton tournament champion trophy. If you are interested in viewing matchups in this event, come to the Marshall Center during break on Tuesday through Friday over the next two weeks to witness the competition and experience the event firsthand.
