Human Rights Day is celebrated on December 10 to honor the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. This important document lays out basic human rights that belong to everyone, no matter their gender, race, religion, or background. It has become the foundation for laws, policies, and the global fight for justice and equality.
The theme for 2024, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” emphasizes how human rights can help build a fairer, more inclusive, and peaceful society. It calls for urgent action to tackle hate speech, misinformation, and social injustices, empowering communities to create a better future for everyone. The Gender Sexuality Club at Harvard-Westlake Middle School had a meeting on December 10, going through an article to help students understand what Human Rights Day is known for.
Mr. Smith, the GSA sponsor, said, “Now, more than ever, we need to look out for each other and take care of each other. Treating another group as “less than” or “other” can have a ripple effect and damage us all in the long run.”
The Gender Sexuality Club at Harvard-Westlake Middle School is highlighting Human Rights Day by supporting the day’s goal of advancing justice and equality. The group aims to increase awareness of the significance of human rights in day-to-day life through student-led projects. Activities include talks, workshops, and informative presentations emphasizing the practical importance of this day.
