As of December 2024, the Mental Health Club (MHAC) has opened the school’s first mindfulness and meditation room. The space, located in Hazy 311, features string lights, blankets, comfortable seating, a zero-gravity chair, and headphones for listening to guided meditations.
The room had its grand opening on Dec. 9, when students stopped by to enjoy sparkling cider and calming vibes. The room is open during break periods, with a teacher supervisor present.
Previously, the mindfulness room served as the World Languages Conference Room. Over the past few weeks, the space was gradually transformed into a functional and cozy environment designed to help students de-stress during the busy school day. A long list of signups shows that many students are already taking advantage of the short meditation sessions offered.
“In collaboration with the wellness director, counseling staff, and the MS Mental Health Club, this initiative aims to create a calm environment for the HW Middle School community to practice mindfulness and meditation,” said Mr. Makluf, a middle school history teacher.
The Harvard-Westlake community has Ms. Tooke, director of student affairs, and Mr. Brabbee, a Spanish teacher, to thank for making this initiative possible.
