The South Asian Student Alliance (SASA) hosted its first full assembly on Oct. 28 in Saperstein Theater. The assembly immersed middle school students in the celebration of Diwali, the Indian festival of lights.
After a brief introduction with a slideshow describing the holiday, three dancers emerged from the wings. They performed a multitude of Bollywood dances, moving through intricate choreography with energy. As the performance wrapped up, they invited the audience to join in. Students across the theater began dancing, uniting in a moment filled with music and laughter.
Many students appreciated SASA’s success at making cultural learning interactive and community-based. “It was one of the most interesting affinity assemblies,” said Hudson Shen, a ninth grader. “I enjoyed the unifying aspect of it.”
The student body was proud to both embrace their differences and find community.
