Harvard-Westlake fencers competed in the Southern California Scholastic League Individual Epee/Saber fencing tournament at Brentwood School on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024. More than 20 Wolverines from the middle and upper school took part in the tournament. Middle school fencers performed strongly, with Gabrielle Wang ’30 finishing fourth in Middle School Women’s Epee and Joseph Holly ’29 placing fifth in Middle School Men’s Epee.
Head Fencing Coach Erika Velarde praised the team’s performance, saying, “The students are doing great. We’re having a big team this year. We have a total of 33 kids.”
The tournament featured over 243 fencers. Participants showcased skill, precision, fitness, quick thinking, and tactical adjustments. “The most important thing is analyzing what’s not working and changing your strategy,” said Marcus Paek ’27. “If you’re getting pushed back on defense, you have to get back some points by being offensive.”
