Swimming and diving succeeds at Mission League Championships

Harvard-Westlake’s (HW) swimming and diving teams joined together for the Mission League Championships. The girl’s varsity team won the championship with 632 points, and while the boy’s varsity team took second with 625 points. The girls and boys JV teams came in fifth and sixth place respectively.

Schools like Alemany, Notre Dame, and Chaminade as well as all-girls and all-boys schools including Loyola, Flintridge Sacred Heart, and St. Francis competed. Over 40 students ranging from ninth graders to seniors represented HW at the two-day event at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center

“It was a great first experience. It was both fun and challenging racing against so many swimmers from all the different schools,” Josephine Tsai ’22 said.

The varsity boys swim team was able to rack up 625 points, despite having a much smaller team than Loyola. Throughout the meet, the girls team was neck-and-neck with the Notre Dame girls team and eventually pulled through to win.

In the boys one-meter diving event, Will Rains ’19 came in first with 430.00 points over the other five divers from Loyola. Cypress Toomey ’19 won the girls’ one-meter diving event with 315.00 points.

HW’s relay A 4×200 yard medley relay team won both days. HW’s varsity 400-yard freestyle A relay also won. Tommy Park ’22 won the boy’s varsity 200-yard individual medley out of 20 swimmers. Therese Enriquez ’22 won the girl’s varsity 50-yard freestyle race, beating the second place Notre Dame swimmer by 0.04 seconds. Enriquez also won the girls 100-yard freestyle. Angelica Sih ’20 won both the girl’s varsity 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke. Ronald Dalmacio ’22 won the boy’s varsity 100-yard backstroke.

“Mission League is the meet that everyone trains for, and this year we definitely showed up. I was really proud to see the team morale and spirit improve from the year before,” Coach Kenan Tugcu said.
