Why and when did you start playing basketball?
I started playing basketball ever since I was a little baby and I played because it’s been my sport, and in middle school, I realized I have a really good chance to be good at it.
What is your favorite moment of this season?
My favorite moment of the season is when I had my first fifteen point plus game against Redondo Union. This was my favorite moment because I knew what it was like to be the man of the team again, and it felt good to score that much because now I know what I am capable of.
What is your favorite part of basketball?
My favorite part of basketball is the games. I love the games because I get to show off the hard work I put in during practice and training.
How often do you practice?
I practice every day.
How do you balance school and your sport?
I balance school and basketball well because I have been doing it a long time. I think the success I found in it was communicating to my teachers and letting them know how I feel about certain units or homework assignments.
How do you prepare for a big game?
For a big game, I just come in realizing it’s just a normal game and that it is still basketball. I don’t get extra excited or anything like that because then it throws me off because my judgment on the court dwindles.
If you could play another Varsity sport what would it be? (Pick 3)
If I were to play another varsity sport, I would play either volleyball, football or baseball. I would pick volleyball because the motion and speed of the game mimics basketball, and it seems fun. I would potentially play football because I have played before, and I am solid at the sport. Lastly, I would play baseball because I have played it the longest.
Do you have any advice for any future varsity players?
Advice I have for future varsity players is that Coach Rebibo cares about you and if he yells at you, he pushes you to be better and he also wants the best for you. I also advise that new coming varsity players should come in with a role and that they should play within that role to the best of their ability.
Ayva Magna Varsity water polo
Why and when did you start playing water polo?
I started in June this past summer. Before starting water polo, I was on a club swim team for about seven years. I wanted to try out water polo because it still involved swimming, but playing a sport that was more team based during competition and every game being completely different seemed a lot more interesting to me. Also, many of my friends were encouraging me to try it out, and I continued to play after having a lot of fun after my first practice.
What is your favorite moment of this season?
On the bus going to one of our games, we were blasting music and the whole team was singing and dancing and just having the best time all the way to Newport Beach.
What is your favorite part of water polo?
Hanging out with my team.
How often do you practice?
Everyday after school for three hours and on Saturdays.
How do you balance school and your sport?
Since I get home pretty late every night, I get all my schoolwork done right away without procrastinating before going over anything I need to for practice the next day, and then I try to get to bed early, so I’m fully rested.
How do you prepare for a big game?
As a team, we come up with three controllable and three uncontrollable factors to focus on during the game and what not to stress about because it’s out of our hands. No matter how stressful the game is, we all try to have fun playing and go out flying.
If you could play another Varsity sport what would it be? (Pick 3)
Swimming, basketball or volleyball.
Do you have any advice for any future varsity players?
Be prepared and focus for practice everyday. It’s tough, and you may not get a lot of playing time right away, but you have to keep constantly pushing yourself and have the best time playing with your teammates.
